The BulletProof Security WordPress htaccess plugin allows you one-click switching between different levels of WordPress htaccess security from within the WordPress Dashboard.  You have the option of using the provided BulletProof Security htaccess files or creating your own htaccess files and having the BulletProof plugin manage your custom htaccess files for you.  The built-in htaccess file editor allows you to edit your WordPress htaccess files from within your WordPress Dashboard without having to edit the WordPress htaccess files via FTP or your web host control panel.  The core htaccess filters in the BulletProof Security htaccess plugin will protect your website from XSS and SQL Injection hacking attempts.  With the built-in WordPress htaccess editor you can add additional htaccess rules to block bad bots or whatever other htaccess coding you want to add to the core htaccess files on the fly.

*** NOTICE ***
BulletProof Security Version .44.1 released 5/5/2010 now includes a backup and restore feature to backup and restore your original existing .htaccess files.  Download your /htaccess folder if you have Version .44 installed before upgrading to Version .44.1 and upload it back to the BulletProof Security plugin folder after you have upgraded.  Version .44.2 will NOT require this extra step.

The BulletProof Security WordPress htaccess plugin is designed for htaccess file handling and management.  BulletProof Security works right out of the box with the htaccess files that are already created and provided for you.  If you choose to modify or create your own WordPress htaccess files and let BulletProof Security manage those WordPress htaccess files for you then you would just modify or create htaccess master files and upload them to the BulletProof Security Plugin folder that contains the master htaccess files.

BulletProof Security htaccess mode allows you to switch between a WordPress default htaccess file, a secure WordPress htaccess file with XSS (Cross Site Scripting) and SQL Injection protection against hackers and a WordPress Maintenance htaccess file that displays a 503 Website Under Maintenance to all visitors to your website except you.  The Website Under Maintenance page includes a customizable Javascript countdown timer that let’s your website visitors know when your website will be back online.

Using redirection instead of using an htaccess RewriteRule can have a negative impact on your SERP’s.  When enabling the BulletProof Security WordPress htaccess Maintenance mode you are putting your website in 503 Service Unavailable status, which will not have a negative impact on your SERP’s even for extended periods of time (up to a week or more).
