Description:  History and facts about the first mechanical sound recording devices to the iPod Touch.  A historical timeline of the first recording and sound playing devices to the modern iPod line of MP3 and MP4 video players.

1857 – The first mechanical sound recording device was the Phonautograph invented by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville. The Phonautograph could record sounds, but could not play it back.
1877 – The first sound recording device that could play back the recorded sounds was the Phonograph (aka Gramophone) invented by Thomas Edison. The Phonograph used a rotating metal cylinder called the Phonograph Cylinder to play sound recordings.
1888 – The first disc records were invented by Emile Berliner. The disc records were made of vulcanized rubber.
1900 – The first legitimate patent for the invention of the radio is credited to Nikola Tesla. There is interesting scandal and corruption surrounding the invention of the radio. Tesla was officially recognized as the true inventor of the radio in 1943.
1906 – The first radio audio “music” broadcast was made on Christmas Eve 1906 by Reginald Fessenden using an Alexanderson alternator and rotary spark-gap transmitter.
1930 – The first vinyl record was made out of plasticized Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Records made from shellac were made from 1897 – 1950’s.
1965 – The first compact disc overall concept of an optical storage system for digital audio and video is credited to and patented by James Russell. James Russell made the first working compact disc prototype in 1973.
1978 – The first Sony Walkman was made. The first Sony Walkman, the blue and silver Walkman TPS-L2, was commercially available in Japan in 1979.
1998 – The first commercially available MP3 player was the MPMan F10/F20, developed by the Korean company Saehan and imported to U.S. by Eiger Labs, Inc and sold in the U.S. as the Eiger Labs MPMan F10/F20. The second commercially available MP3 player was the Rio PMP300.
1999 – The first hard drive based MP3 player was the PJB-100 (Personal Jukebox), developed by Compaq and licensed for manufacture to HanGo Electronics (now known as Remote Solution).
2001 – The first iPod MP3 player, the iPod Classic was released by Apple Computer (now known as Apple Inc.). The idea of using the name iPod came from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase “Open the pod bay door, Hal”.
2004 – The first iPod Mini MP3 player was commercially released by Apple Inc.
2004 – The first iPod U2 Special Edition (iPod U2) was commercially released by Apple Inc.
2004 – The first iPod Photo MP3 player was commercially released by Apple Inc. In addition to being an MP3 player the iPod Photo allowed users to store and display color photographs.
2005 – The first iPod Nano MP3 player was commercially released by Apple Inc. The first iPod Nano with video recording capability (video camera included) was commercially released in 2007.
2005 – The first iPod Video MP4 video player and MP3 player was commercially released by Apple Inc.
2005 – The first iPod Shuffle MP3 player was commercially released by Apple Inc.
2007 – The first iPod Touch MP3, MP4 video player was commercially released by Apple Inc.
2007 – The iPod Classic MP3, MP4 video player (retronym suffix from the original iPod classic) was commercially released by Apple Inc. and has the largest standard iPod hard drive available with a 160GB hard drive. The iPod Classic with a 160GB hard drive was originally released in 2007, then discontinued in 2008 and then re-released in 2009.
2009 – The first iPod to include a video camera was the iPod Nano 5G (fifth generation).
2009 – 2010 – The largest iPod hard drive capability possible to date is a 240GB iPod hard drive. This requires a custom upgrade to the 2nd generation iPod Video 5.5G 60GB and 80GB units (model numbers: MA003LL/A, MA147LL/A, MA448LL/A and MA450LL/A).
