The orginal question was regarding the classic known whitespace formatting problem with the wysiwyg editor.  The answer contains information about this know whitespace formatting problem in WordPress and an advanced WordPress formatting solution.

I think what you are looking for is a WordPress plugin called “TinyMCE Advanced”. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tinymce-advanced/ The builtin WordPress wysiwyg editor is called TinyMCE. TinyMCE Advanced is an advanced wysiwyg editor which will take care of the known issue of “whitespace” being automatically stripped by the default WordPress wysiwyg editor. There are also many other AWESOME editing features and additional toolbar buttons in this plugin so you should have it anyway. Table formatting can be a pain in the rear when using the WordPress default TinyMCE editor. TinyMCE Advanced makes creating and formatting tables rows, columns and cells fast and very smooth. Once you install the TinyMCE Advanced plugin you need to configure it in the Dashboard. This is very easy. You are just going to drag and drop your new toolbar buttons to create a new advanced toolbar. No coding is required – totally drag and drop. Be sure to check the checkbox for allowing whitespace NOT to be automatically stripped from your posts. Good luck! 😉

Thanks for your speedy reply but for some reason, I can’t get TinyMCE to work on my wordpress even though I have the latest version.

Oh it sounds like either you have a conflict with another plugin that is using javascript or jquery then. Your best bet would probably be to post in the plugin authors plugin blog or try his/her site directly. >>> http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tinymce-advanced/. I have not done any backend coding or recoding work with or on this plugin. I have only mucked around with the user front end sorry.

In fact, after I followed instructions faithfully and to the letter, I can’t get the thing to work at all..!

So where’s the checkbox for allowing whitespace NOT to be automatically stripped from your posts? I can’t find it.!!!!

This post was referring directly to an older version of this plugin. Go to your WP Settings Panel and Click on TinyMCE Advanced to go to the options page and in the most current version of this plugin you will see >>> Stop removing the p and b tags when saving and show them in the HTML editor. This is the same as stop removing white space automatically in the WP WYSIWYG editor. Thanks.
