WordPress Themes on GoDaddy – Installing a New WordPress Theme

The orginal question was regarding installing a new WordPress Theme on GoDaddy.ย  Theย question was actually about installing WordPress on GoDaddy, the application itself, not a WordPress Theme.

Sounds like you are just a little bit confused about the whole web hosting and website domain thing. I’ll go easy I was once there myself years ago. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The WordPress.org thing had me confused in the beginning too. When people refer to WordPress.org it literally just means that you are using their WordPress application created by the WordPress.org coders who wrote it. You can’t actually move to WordPress.org website because that is their domain and they just offer free hosting on their wordpress.com domain that they created. It’s just kind of a generalized assumed statement for comparing the freebie .com to the actual WordPress application itself. When you say .org it just means that you will be using their application on your own web hosting. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Your old free wordpress.com website on wordpress.com web hosting will always be there unless you decide to get rid of it. So forget about your old dashboard for now. What you have now is a new web host with Godaddy and I don’t see that you mentioned that you bought a new domain name for your new website that will be hosted on Godaddy. You are creating a new website on Godaddy and will still have the old website on wordpress.com. So basically you will have 2 websites once you buy your new domain name and install WordPress on Goddaddy in your new website account (domain). Godaddy has the best customer service and technical support of any web hosting company I have ever used or worked with so they will walk you through everything you need to do very quickly and easily.

From the way your question is phrased about thinking you have to move your wordpress.com site to wordpress.org it sounds like you are seeing WordPress itself as a thing that can exist in only one place. WordPress is just an application made up of a bunch of files so like I said you will be installing the WordPress application yourself on Godaddy. Very easy to do, but call tech support since this is the first time you have done this. It will take about 10 minutes to do this if you use tech support help. They can also help you with uploading your theme to your new Godaddy FTP site so that you can activate it in your new Godaddy WordPress website installation.

Since your only experience with WordPress has been the freebie experience you never really had full control of your old WordPress website, since with a free wordpress.com website you just sign up and they do all the rest. Don’t be intimidated. Once you have your new WordPress site installed and set up you are going to be ecstatic after using the freebie WordPress.com site you had with all the limitations and restrictions. $20 bucks says you get plugin fever within 24 hours. LOL There is such a thing as installing too many WordPress plugins. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Do a little Internet research first on the do’s and dont’s of installing WordPress plugins. That is where you will hit your first bump in the road like everyone does in the beginning, but it is part of the fun learning process with WordPress. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So just to rehash what I blabbed about above. Think of your old WordPress website as a spare or extra website. You will be creating a brand new WordPress website. Welcome to the Starship Enterprise. LOL
